Back To School…

Hi everyone,

Brad here- – it seems like school just started, but somehow we are only couple of weeks away from midterms!  How the heck did that happen?  The real question is, how the heck am I back in school?  I thought I just graduated from Merrimack back in 2006?!   After five years out in the real world I decided that it was time for me to head back to school –  – and here I landed in the world of UMass Boston as a Graduate Assistant for the Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement.   For those of you who know my director Sherrod, let’s just say I started doing work the second I got to campus and I haven’t stopped working since… wait, check that… I started doing work two weeks before I even started my job reading over applications for the Freshman Leadership Institute!   (no surprise there…)

Back in September, 46 Freshmen students headed down to Duxbury for a Leadership Weekend known as the Freshman Leadership Institute (FLI).  What a great way to get myself involved at school right away but having a chance to be a facilitator on leadership retreat.  The freshmen had a chance to learn a little bit about themselves, learn about their leadership styles, and be mentored by seven of the GREATEST here at UMass Boston.  Big shoujtouts to Kadeem, Flo-Jo, Breezy, Christie, Caleb, Tori,  and Evita!  Oh, and this weekend wouldn’t have happened without the hard work of Daphnee!! You guys were awesome!!   The freshmen also had a chance to challenge themselves on a ropes course and do some team building as well.  At the end of the day, everyone had a blast despite the rain and creepiness of it being pitch black every night in the middle of the woods!

It was a fun way to finally get to meet some people on campus…   Granted, it’s cool for grad students to have their only friends be undergrads right?!   Kidding..

I mean, we were kind of a big deal.  The mentors were rockin’ the front page of the UMass Boston website the week we got back from our trip.

Good luck with your midterms! Go out there and explore the world outside of the classroom!

My cheeseball quote for the day:
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page”
